ABOUT ME

English speaking psychologist in Hamburg, Germany

I’m Jonathan Back, an Australian psychologist based in Hamburg, where I’ve lived since 2013.

I offer therapy exclusively in English, helping clients navigate the twists and turns of life with a mix of insight, empathy, and a dash of Aussie humour.

Having relocated myself, I understand how shifts in language, culture, identity, and belonging can shape how we see ourselves. Those experiences deepened not only my cross-cultural understanding but also my appreciation for what connects us as humans. They’ve helped me offer support that’s both empathic and culturally attuned to people making big transitions of their own.

Before moving to Germany, I trained and worked in psychology across a range of settings. I specialise in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which combines evidence and compassion to help people make sense of what they feel and take practical steps toward what really matters.

As a parent, I know how easily responsibilities and expectations can take over, leaving little space for reflection or rest. Therapy isn’t about fixing what’s wrong but about finding space to understand, realign, and move forward in a way that feels authentic.

I’ve also noticed how many people turn to online tools or AI to make sense of what they’re feeling. While technology can be helpful, it can also leave us more alone—surrounded by information but starved of understanding. Real change still happens in connection, in the presence of another person who helps you feel seen. In a world that moves fast and talks loud, that kind of conversation matters more than ever.

I’m currently writing a book about feelings—part memoir, part psychology, and an exploration of the strange adventure of being human.

If any of this resonates, you’re welcome to reach out for an initial conversation. You don’t need to have a clear plan, only a sense that something deserves attention.
